Not race riots per se, although the propogators of the violence are primarily immigrants from Pakistan, Somalia, Afghanistan amongst other hell holes. It begun in protest about an ARMED man being shot dead by police in Tottenham on Thursday night. After the first riot people quickly realised that there wasn’t sufficient police manpower to quell arbitrary mass demonstrations due to the logistics of shifting police around the city, individuals have expolited this by gathering in large numbers in various parts of the city at a similar time. The riots are not any expression of political malice nor are they intended to draw attention to any particular issue the group wish to highlight, although it is my opinion that there is no issue other than ill-educated thugs having an opportunistic burst of violence and looting. The basic premise of these riots is to steal, loot and cause general anarchy, there is no aim, no cause against which to fight and certianly no justification for their actions. Today Scotland promised to help the English police by sending their wing of the military police and as a result of this contribution (amongst others) the size of the London police force will increase 170% over the next few days, so tonight will either see an end to the violence or it will result in large scale unrest in which the police ma feel little option but to open fire on the protestors should they continue unabated.

    Should be an interesting night!!

Thanks Stu, awesome commentary. I was posing the question as to whether or not the riots were race based. There seems to be a similarity between these riots, the Chicago Riots and The Soweto Uprising. It is interesting because more than race, London’s current riots are more likely to be “class based”. When people have rising expectations that the state cant fulfill, they revolt. POL 101. Its crazy to see this happening in the first world, where perviously people have presumed revolution is just brewing under the service in Africa. Perhaps general dissatisfaction and frustration exists in all societies, even those that appear to be diplomatic. Look, I don’t have any answers, but these are certainly interesting questions…
